Activities in Lafayette and West Lafayette Area

Lafayette and West Lafayette are diverse communities which offer a number of exciting opportunities to enjoy food, shopping, and all sorts of outdoor activities. Below are a few of the activities that members of the graduate community enjoy taking part in. (All dates shown are from 2009)



18-19 - Purdue Spring Fest—A weekend featuring fun activities for the whole family on the Purdue Campus. Celebrate Gala Week and Mother’s Weekend along with the Bug Bowl, Horticulture Show, Veterinary Open House and more. www.purdue.edu/springfest

25 - Purdue Grand Prix Race—Go-kart race on the track north of Ross-Ade Stadium. Car show, parade, time trials and other activities are also included. www.purduegrandprix.org

23 ‘Round the Fountain Art Fair—One of the best one-day art shows in the Midwest. Offerings include paintings, sculptures, pottery, photography, prints, jewelry and other media. Held downtown on the Courthouse Square. www.roundthefountain.org

20 - Comcast Taste of Tippecanoe—Festival highlighting food from favorite area restaurants and serving it up with a variety of music, dancing and fireworks. www.tippecanoearts.org

26-28 - Indiana Fiddlers’ Gathering—A traditional music gathering encouraging playing, listening and dancing. All anticipate both the formal stage presentations and the informal jam sessions. Held at Tippecanoe Battlefield Historic Park. www.indianafiddlersgathering.org
26-July 7 - Festooned Fourth Display—Ninth Street Hill Historic Neighborhood Association celebrates by decorating “The Hill” with flags of all periods, bunting, and lots of red, white and blue. www.ninthstreethill.org

4 - Stars and Stripes Concert with Fireworks—Patriotic music from Lafayette Citizens Band followed by an amazing firework display at dusk. Purdue University, Slayter Center.

11 - Riverfest—A day to appreciate the Wabash River with voyageur canoe competitions, crafts, entertainment and educational displays. Tapawingo Park in West Lafayette. www.HomeOfPurdue.com/Riverfest.html

18 - Dancing in the Streets—Live music, dancing, classic car displays, cruise-in and more. Held Downtown at Riehle Plaza and Tapawingo Park. www.dancinginthestreets.net

18-25 - Tippecanoe County 4-H Fair—Fair highlighted by 4-H projects, animal competitions, entertainment, exhibits, carnival, tractor pull and more. Held at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds.

24-26 - Tippecanoe Steam & Gas Power Show—This festival features antique tractors and cars, gas engines, threshing machines, quilting, food and music. Held at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater. www.tsgpai.org

5-12 - Colt World Series—Teams from all over the world come to Loeb Stadium in Columbian Park to compete in baseball play-offs for 15 to 16 year olds. www.coltworldseries.com

22 - Uptown Jazz and Blues—Jazz and Blues along with food and drink, a combination that is just right on a hot summer night! Held downtown on 5th Street between Main and Columbia. www.jazz-blues.org

11-13 - Layflats Arts & Music Festival—Family event including activities and games for children. Showcases local artists, bands and musicians and offers food and a beer garden. Held at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater. www.layflatsfestival.com

3 - Purdue Homecoming—Enjoy all the homecoming activities on the Big Ten campus highlighted by the Purdue vs. Northwestern football game. Come for the weekend and see the Homecoming parade, pep rally, pre-game concert and other special events. http://purduesports.com

10-11 - Feast of the Hunters’ Moon—Historical reenactment featuring traditional crafts, goods and life-styles of the 18th century trade period. Held on the banks of the Wabash River at Fort Ouiatenon. www.tcha.mus.in.us


11 - Armistice Day—A traditional Armistice Day commemoration at Historic Prophetstown. www.prophetstown.org


5 - Dickens of a Christmas—Downtown is filled with carolers, costumed characters from Dickens’ novels, carriage rides, live entertainment, food and demonstrating artisans. Followed by a holiday lighting ceremony at Riehle Plaza. www.dickensofachristmas.com

6 - Christmas Parade—Indiana’s largest holiday parade. Crowds line the streets to see Santa, marching bands, floats, clowns, fire engines, police cars and much more. Route begins at 9th and Main Street and travels west, ending at Tapawingo Park. www.lafayettewestlafayettechristmasparade.com

11-13 - Purdue Christmas Show—Held in the beautiful Elliott Hall of Music, this holiday student production has been declared on of the most outstanding musical presentations in the country! http://pmojo.com/events/christmas-show

22-24 - Holiday Luminaria Display—Originally started by the Ninth Street Hill Historic Neighborhood Association and now joined by other historic neighborhoods throughout the city, this beautiful evening holiday display features over 500 luminara. www.ninthstreethill.org
